The Little Folk idea was born after my son received a book by Slinkachu in 2012. I realised that I could use his ideas in my job as a primary school teacher in order to encourage reluctant writers. During 2012/13, I photographed the characters around school and published them on the school blog with cryptic notes around the school hinting at the 'sightings'. It didn't take long to fire the imaginations of the children and they were eager to see new photos and write about the images. The Little Folk began to get blamed if things went missing or moved, and children were making up their own scenarios at home as well as in school.
Fast-forward to our annual Scilly holiday in May 2013 and I discovered the packet of model figures were still in my camera bag. I realised that I could add a new dimension to the school blog by photographing the figures 'on holiday'. As a joke, I put a couple onto the Scillywebcam Appreciation Facebook page and had a few amusing comments from some of the regulars on there. Last year, after posting some holiday pics, a few people asked where the Little Folk were, so this year I decided to take them down again. Photographing them this year (2016) proved to be more of a challenge, as I wanted to photograph different scenarios, but with an obvious Scilly twist.
Most of the images are shot in pairs - the second being a close-up of the first image in order to focus on the characters.
I have to say that I enjoyed crawling around looking at the islands from a different perspective. I will share these photos with my new class in the hope of inspiring them to look more closely at the world around them.
I hope that you enjoy them too...
